Step 9. Detailed assessments
During the initial assessment of the fishery, data to conduct fishery assessments were limited for each of the target species. Working with local stakeholders, a data collection system was designed early on in the process to continuously improve the quality and quantity of data available for assessment and management, resulting in an expanded data stream. The expanded data stream included information on catch-per-unit effort (CPUE) and a larger sample size of length data from the catch. These data were used to determine additional methods to use from the method matrix, for a reassessment of the fishery for the three priority species and development of adaptive management measures.
Using all of these data streams and methodologies, a team of stakeholders developed an adaptive management scheme through a collaborative process. The indicators selected to represent the finfish are from both fishery dependent and independent data streams, including the CPUE trends, fishing mortality limits, total catch trends and the MPA density Ratio.
